Fulani Menace resurrects as more die in clashes with nomadic herdsmen

A Group by name Kwahu Youth for Social Development has called for the deployment of more police personnel to communities in Kwahu where Fulanis are resident.

President of the group, Solomon Tettey, told NEWSMEN that the presence of the police is necessary to prevent the recurrence of clashes between Fulani herdsmen and indigenes.

At least two persons are dead while three are on admission at the Yendi Hospital following reprisal attacks on Fulani’s in Yendi Sunday night.

Security has been beefed up in communities in Kwahu East Districts where eight people have lost their lives in an attack by Fulani herdsmen.

PRO of the Eastern Regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said the police hierarchy has met with the Chiefs and opinion leaders of the affected community to reassure them of their safety.

ASP Tetteh said two people are currently receiving treatment at the hospital following gunshot wounds they sustained.

No arrests have been made yet.

Meanwhile, Security Analyst, Adib Saani is advocating the creation of an exclusive zone for Fulani herdsmen to graze their cattle.

This, in his view, will help eliminate clashes that occur between the herdsmen and indigenes of certain communities.

Mr. Saani is also calling for more engagement between indigenes and the Fulanis.

His comments followed renewed clashes between Fulani herdsmen and some indigenes in Kwahu as well as Yendi which left a number of people dead.

Mr Saani said it is not right to stereotype all Fulanis as criminals.

Rather, there should be more engagements to promote coexistence in the communities.
